Do you think that rats are the right companions to bring into your life? If so, you'll need to study up, and learn the in's and out's of proper rattie care. There is a lot to learn, and many pros and cons to living with these fantastic animals.
Many people are unaware of the time and care that goes into properly caring for rat companions. Rats are social beings, so it's important to bring home more than one, and they are generally a 2-3 year commitment. They also require a higher level of veterinary care than many other small animals, and should never be brought into the home unless you are prepared to meet these health care needs......which can often be spendy. Rats are prone to respiratory illness (which requires antibiotic treatment), and also tumors (which often require surgery).
Those who share their lives' with rats can attest to how worth the effort they are to keep. Rats make fabulous companions. They have the intelligence level of a dog or a cat, but in compact form. A rat doesn't need a huge yard, or daily walks...they just need a healthy environment, and plenty of love and attention from you! Rats become very attached to their owners, and can be trained to do very impressive tricks.
Rats can make wonderful pets, and loving additions to almost any household, but potential owners must be aware of their special needs. Rats are not disposable pets, they are intelligent companions that deserve the utmost in care and respect. In return, you get huge amounts of love and affection in a tiny package!
