It typically happens to all of us at some point. You check up on your rats, and find that someone is hurt. Here are some tips for dealing with minor injuries. This is only my experience and my advice, and any questions about this information should be run by your personal vet.
Sprains or minor breaks can typically be treated at home. They can be identified by swelling and of course limping, or not using the foot. If there is any discoloration or an open wound involved, the injury could be more serious, and a trip to the vet is advised.
The injured rat should be removed from the cage environment, and moved to a sick tank. Staying in a group environment can cause further injury and hinder healing, as the rat would be more likely to play too rough or get an infection. The sick tank bedding should be cleaned each day, and any fresh food removed before it spoils.
To speed healing, you can give 1/2 of a Children's Aspirin (1/2 of one 80mg tablet) twice a day for swelling. It'll help reduce inflammation, and also reduce the pain. About a week of this treatment should do the trick, and you should see your rat improving!
No matter how well socialized your rats are, sometimes bite wounds happen. They typically aren't too serious, and can simply be treated by cleaning them and dabbing on some peroxide. Keep an eye on them though, to make certain they do not become infected or form an abcess. If an abcess does form, make an appt. with your vet to have the abcess drained and to start the rat on antibiotics to prevent infection.
Any open wound is a chance for an infection to start, so be diligent....and for open wounds a course of a general antibiotic can stop any problems before they start.
